Caritas – Lok Naach Bhangra Competition

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Caritas Lok Naach Bhangra Competition was held on the 1st of September 2019. Organized by the Caritas Community Center and coorganized by the Lok Naach Society, this was the first bhangra competition to be held in Hong Kong. More than 200 people came to see and support the show and the participants.
Six local teams participated, alongside guest performances by Lion Dance, local Hong Kong singer Mankirat Randhawa, team Funjabi Bhangra Hong Kong (choreographed by dance instructor Harry) and local Chinese performers. The event also hosted games and lucky draws.
The international judges consisted of team Gabroo Gulab Wargey from Fresno USA, Dilkaran Singh Brar (Dee Brar) the founder of Gabroo Gulab Wargey &Jaskirat Kaur Brar (BabberSherni).
All the teams performed with tremendous energy and enthusiasm, expressing their love for the dance form. Team Virsa Nachda came out as the winner, team Sandli Paidan in second place and the 3rd place went to team Bhangra De Baroodh. It was thrilling to see teenagers living
in a cosmopolitan city outside of India demonstrating such enthusiasm and passion for bhangra. As Dilkaran Brar, one of the judge’s said ‘I was so happy to see our culture alive and thriving in Hong Kong. The dancers are very passionate about bhangra and their connection to our
roots and the support from the community towards bhangra is amazing to see. Thank you to Lok Naach for having me and I cannot wait to see all of you spread the love for bhangra and our culture in every corner of the world.’
Festivals, music, food, and dance are all catalysts in bringing people together. Mr. Kuldeep Buttar also added that being a part of community events such as this one always brings him tremendous joy. Being Punjabi, bhangra a Punjabi folk dance is very close to his heart. He also stressed how important it is to hold such events to educate the children about different cultures in India.
This competition has contributed to the growth of the folk-dance community in Hong Kong. With the help of the participants, judges and organizers the people here, Indians and locals alike were able to enjoy one of our biggest cultural
phenomena.
