The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is an international religious organisation dedicated to promoting Vegetarianism, Yoga, Healthy Lifestyles and Traditional Indian Vedic religion and cultural values. It aims to foster a society that respects life, love and harmony.  To date, the organisation has opened more than 500 centres and farm communities around the world, hundreds of vegetarian restaurants, hosted thousands of local group gatherings and various community food relief projects. It encompasses millions of members worldwide, spread out over every continent and every major city in the world.

More commonly known as the “Hare Krishna” movement, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness adheres to the tradition of Bhakti Yoga within the Gaudiya Vaisnava tradition, which is a branch of Hinduism. In 1970, the Hare Krishna movement first appeared in Hong Kong and then later, the centre was officially registered in 1981.

2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the Hare Krishna movement in Hong Kong, and to celebrate this historical moment, ISKCON held a two day, online celebration from its centre in Tsim Sha Tsui, on December 25 and 26.

The activities included an online session by the pioneers and founding members of the movement in Hong Kong, who shared their experiences, challenges and milestones achievements of the movement during its inception.

ISKCON members live by the motto “Simple Living, High Thinking”. Over the years, they have been actively encouraging people from all walks of life to understand the importance of spiritual knowledge and how it can help one to successfully overcome the challenges of daily life.

The founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness is His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, affectionately known to his disciples as “Srila Prabhupada”. In 1965, at the age of 69, with great effort and determination, he boarded a cargo ship from Calcutta to New York, with the aim of helping people in the Western world find their spiritual essence. He taught the ancient teachings of Bhakti Yoga and demonstrated how to actually use this knowledge to live a happy and fulfilling life. Srila Prabhupada unveiled the secrets and sacred spiritual knowledge within the Vedic tradition and made them accessible to all. His “Bhagavad Gita As It Is” is the best-selling version of “Bhagavad Gita” in the Western world, and has been translated into 76 languages.
