ADOPTING A CANINE FRIEND IN THE YEAR OF THE DOG

With the advent of the Chinese New Year, we have now moved to the Year of The Dog in 2018. If you have been considering adding a furry member to your family, then there is no better or auspicious time than now! Depending on your needs and requirements, the various animal rescue shelters in Hong Kong will always have the perfect fit for your family.

Adopting a Dog in Hong Kong:
There are various rescue organizations in Hong Kong, from where you can adopt your new family member. They can even match your needs and requirements to ensure a perfect fit with your family. And it goes without saying, adopt don’t shop! With no reputable breeders in Hong Kong and dodgy pet shops selling sickly puppies, adoption is definitely the most ethical way to adding a pet to your family. Even if you are looking for a particular breed, with patience, you will always find one looking for a home through these organizations.

But I must make a special mention of the HK ‘Tong Gau’ or more fondly referred to as the Hong Kong Specials. These are the native mongrels of Hong Kong and are amongst the most loving, loyal and sturdy breeds out there. Being natives of HK, they react much better to the heat and humidity and also have much fewer health issues than other pure breeds (which, more often than not, suffer terrible health issues due to inbreeding). Give them a home and they will love you unconditionally for life.

Fostering A Dog In Hong Kong:
For those of you who cannot commit to the long-term ownership of a pet, the next best way to go is fostering. With fostering you can enjoy all the benefits of having a pet at home, but will not have to worry about possible future moves or change of circumstances. All costs of food and medical care are taken care of by the recue organizations and you will not incur any financial overlays.

You can also start by fostering a dog instead of adopting one directly. Through fostering you can ensure that your family is actually ready to have a furry member added to it and also that the dog is
well suited. There are tons of dogs waiting at the shelters to get a chance to at least be fostered. You could be changing the life of a dog. As the beautiful saying goes ‘Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.’

Animal Rescue Organizations in Hong Kong:

Following are some of the bigger and more well known rescue organizations in Hong Kong. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list, but most of these organizations conduct regular adoption
days where you can possibly meet your future furry companion! Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR), SKSF (Sai Kung Stray Friends), Catherine’s Puppies, Kirsten’s Zoo, Lifelong Animal Protection (LAP)
