Empowering a NGO

TO IMPROVE THE ORAL HEALTH STATUS OF NON -ETHNIC CHINESE COMMUNITY IN HONG KONG

It is a project that has created an avenue the opportunity to determine the oral health status and improve their dental health, knowledge and self-care capacity of ethnic minorities.

A series of 4 fairs has been organized across Yau Ma Tei, Kwun Tong, Wan Chai and Yuen Long successfully reached out more than 1200-1500 participants and screened a total of 838 patients from different age, income and nationalities. Through the initial dental screening, a mean DMFT of 2.85 was founded with a major trend towards missing teeth for >60 years and dental caries for < 30 years. These findings imply a compelling need to enhance the oral hygiene measures of the population to ensure no further increase in DMFT scores.

Regarding the feedback from the participants with or without dental health problems, 91% participants were happy to learn about how to maintain their teeth, 86.4% for understanding more about the existing dental health support and facilities in Hong Kong, 92.2% showed willingness to come to more programmes and 92% really enjoyed the dental health fairs.
