[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Indian Recreation Club was established in 1917. At the club’s inaugural meeting in September 1917, Mr. J.H.N Mody was elected President, Position he served until 1925.
The club allotted its present site by the Government in 1918 but it was not until July 1919 that the grounds were ready for play. A club-house in the form of a mat-shed (typical for the day) was put up and members started to prepare a cricket pitch or “wicket” and trained hard to be ready for their first game on “home soil”.
In 1923 the club installed a blowing green, 2 tennis courts and the cricket pitch was extended.
In 1931, the club set a record on the playing fields winning both the 1st and 2nd Divisions Shields in Cricket in the same season and for Tennis, the 1st Division and Mixed Doubles Championships.
The following year, in 1932, the club repeated its remarkable performance of the prior year by capturing the same 4 titles.
Over the years, the Club teams and players excelled in cricket and lawn bowls in the domestic leagues. Some of the club players went on to represent Hong Kong in international competitions, winning Gold Medals in lawn bowls at the Commonwealth Games and World Bowls Championships.
The IRC ground ceased to be used for cricket after the 1979-80 seasons; tennis and lawn bowls had taken precedence and remain the two main competitive sports of the Club. Outside sports, the Club is regularly used by members for social and cultural activities. The club membership is truly cosmopolitan as it is open to all nationalities.
